Color or B&W?

Well hello there! I'm Sam, a photographer from the Greater Boston area, and I'm hoping to use this new blog to chat a little bit about different shoots, photography, editing, gear, and whatever else I feel like!

Today I'm hoping to get some opinions regarding the age old battle of Color Vs. Black and White photography. I've uploaded three portraits for some side by side comparison.

First, here's Kaylee. Kaylee has bright red and pink hair, like she was built in Jim Henson's workshop. It's tough to photograph, but usually adds a great splash of color to a photo. It's also true to Kaylee's personality, which is exceptionally bright and bubbly. The black and white version is interesting to me however, since her hair appears black and gives a greater contrast to her skin. Also, in the black and white, her hair is less of a distraction from her eyes, which are the most important part of any portrait.

Next is Caitlin. Caitlin is a hair and makeup artist and I've always enjoyed shooting her face (humor). Personally, I feel that while the color version really allows her makeup and highlights to shine, the black and white is much more mysterious and dramatic. Also the black and white gives her skin a very porcelain look.

And finally we have Curtis. Shooting men and women couldn't be more different. With women, one always wants soft, flattering light. Men, however, should appear more masculine. This mean's harder light, and more contrast. For curtis, I feel the black and white version accentuates that contrast even more then the original color version.

And that's enough for one day! I'd love to get your opinion and learn which version of each photo you prefer!
